Ellenroad Steam Museum

At Ellenroad, the engine house and boiler house are all that remain of the cotton mill that stood here.

The original mule spinning mill (1892) was powered by engines Victoria and Alexandra, but was destroyed
by fire in 1916. After the war, a new ring-spinning mill was built and the engines were refurbished.

When electrification of the mill was completed in 1975, Victoria and Alexandra fell silent. In 1985, the mill closed and was largely demolished, leaving only the engine and boiler houses.

In 1986, the Ellenroad Trust acquired the Whitelees Beam Engine and, in 1992, this was put into steam. The engines, boiler house and its 220-foot high chimney were saved !

Of the five original Lancashire boilers, one remains. This is still coal-fired.
It powers Victoria, Alexandra and the other Ellenroad engines.
